A Musicians Biography
As part of my research into electronic press kits I found that I needed to develop my research into what a musicians biography means, with it being one of the most important parts of a press kit I wanted to know how it helps an artist as well as how to write one so that I could write them as well as teach others on how to write them. To do this I used 2 websites that I found informative and the most useful, these were:
“Writing an Effective Music Bio”
“How to write an effective musicians bio”
Here is what I learnt
Taking notes
Taking notes is the easiest and usually the best way to begin writing anything, this is because you can later expand on the basic points to give them depth and to give fans/journalists/festivals more of an insight into you as an artist and your music. If you are struggling with the start of your notes you may want to consider compiling a list of basic questions (where you are from? What genre of music do you produce?) and then you can move onto more in depth questions that will give you more substance to work with (why did you start making music? What are your proudest moments in your music career?). You want to give enough information to make it interesting but you also don’t want to overload your readers which is why you need to convert your notes into an engaging introduction.
An engaging introduction
Once you have completed your not taking you should start to put together your biography but you need an introduction to start everything off. It shouldn’t be as difficult as just starting fresh and trying to write something off the top of your head because you have the notes to help you. One thing to remember is that journalists want to be able to copy and paste different parts of the bio so you need to write in 3rd person, stay clear and don’t ramble but also don’t use opinionated phases as this is the journalists job and they should be making their professional opinions on you and your music. A good thing to decide before you start writing is to decide how you want to be perceived, do you want to be strictly professional or would you like to let your personality shine within the bio? If you want to add personality you should begin to add in spots of humour and this will add to the overall feel of the biography. When you start to expand your reach into different countries it could be a good idea to translate the biography into different languages so that others can read it if they can’t read english/whatever language you originally write it in.

Upon looking further into “Writing an Effective Music Bio” I discovered their section “Tips from People who Read Hundreds of Artist Bio’s” and I found it to be insightful and it gave me a different perspective of how to write a bio, I will be referring to the website if I want to refresh myself at all.
Also looking into “How to write an effective musicians bio” I found examples of real life musician biographies and this has really helped me develop my understanding of what should be in it and what works for artists, I will be referring to the website if I need any further guidance on the bios.
