Case Study 1: The Ministry of Sound
ministry of sound.png

Originally, The Ministry of Sound was not a popular name that you saw and heard almost everyday. When it first opened in September 1991, the building used was a derelict bus garage located in South London which, at the time, wasn`t as popular as it is today. Its design was inspired by New York's house venues.

On their opening night, there was no alcohol, 3 flashing lights and the venue had moody security guards who wouldn't let you in unless you knew a certain number of Chicago house DJ's. Despite all of this the night was a success and within a few weeks word spread that something special had landed in the streets or south London.

This was the first club in London and possibly the UK that was fully dedicated to house music. It was also the first club to be built purely for exceptional sound quality.

"There is no better place to hear the worlds greatest DJ's play the world's best music" ~ Taken directly from the Ministry of sound Website

The current club has a total of 4 rooms. The main room is called The Box, it was designed for making sound the most important feature. It has towering sound speaker stacks, several million watts of bass and triple-thick absorbing walls. "You have to experience The Box in person to appreciate just how unique it is." ~ Also taken directly from the Ministry of Sound Website

The 103 is the first room that you walk into when entering the building. The room serves as a second stage on club nights and it is where some breakthrough artists go to be discovered and to hit the big leagues.

The Baby Box creates an intimate 3rd room and is tucked away beside 103.

The Loft is the best place to catch upcoming record labels and promoters before they've taken off.

The club prides itself on having an amazing sound system, they own a 64 speaker, 22 channel sound system with a ring of 6 bespoke Martin Audio ground stack positioned around the dance floor box.

Case Study 2: Sony Music UK

In 1887 a record label was created and it was called Columbia Records. To this day. Columbia is the oldest recorded label in the history of the recording industry.

Sony Music then emerged and created a world class label and industry leader, which is home to some of the most loved and most successful artists we now today. The label brought together the best in the business and is now in partnership with Columbia, RCA, Syco Commercial Group, Red essential, Relentless, Black Butter, Ministry of Sound and Insanity.

They have headquarters in New York and London which have 2 separate CEO's, Doug Morris for the US (1st of July 2011) and Jason Iley for the UK (April 2014).

Their current revenue is about $7.27 billion US dollars.

The parent companies of Sony Music are Sony Music Entertainment and BMG Europe and it was founded in 1980.

In 2017 they announced a merger with 2 of its independent distribution companies, The Orchard and Red Essential. In 2014 Sony Music had 11 number 1's and their artists won a total of 5 awards which was probably their best year until 2017 came along bringing their biggest success of winning 7 of the 11 BRIT awards.
