Playlist Task

For this task we had to Curate a playlist for two different themes and songs that related to our given theme

Songs about change
What about Us.jpg

The first song about change that i decided to pick was P!nk's song "What About Us". This song paints a picture of a broken America. The lyrics are quite vague and they could apply to any sort of injustice. The song is actually about the current administration and how they are “breaking promises” that they made to the people, we know this because the New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s keynote speech at the Republican National Convention plays at the beginning of her music video which is of Chris promising things to the public that aren’t getting done.

The story of OJ.jpg

The second song that I chose was "The Story of O.J." by JAY-Z

O.J. Simpson’s 1995 acquittal in the murder of ex-wife Nicole Simpson marked a seemingly unprecedented case where a black man was apparently granted the assumed innocence typically reserved for white folks in a society overrun by racist police brutality. But a decade later, the former NFL star was sentenced to 33 years in prison for armed robbery and kidnapping.

JAY-Z’s incisive song gets at what it means to be black in America and unpacks the idea that success can separate one from their race.

Kendrick-lamar-iv.png

The last song that I chose for songs about change was Kendrick Lamar's "The Heart part 4". In a world gone mad, Kendrick Lamar takes it upon himself to spit the truth. Released in anticipation of his critically acclaimed third album, DAMN., “The Heart Part 4” functions as a multipurpose dis track, aimed at an unknown rapper, Donald Trump and society at large.

Set against a swirling vocal loop from an uncredited Khalid, Lamar’s flow is constantly shape-shifting. He opens the first verse with rapid fire rhyming, eventually pausing for emphasis on the line, “I am the greatest rapper alive!” as if there’s an imaginary clapping hands emoji between each word. The rapper shifts his focus to the current administration’s Russia problem, calling the president a “chump.” “Electorial votes look like memorial votes/ But America's truth ain't ignorin' the votes.”

Songs about emotion
Fix You.jpg

The first song that I chose about emotion was Coldplay's "Fix You". This song covers both sadness and love, it is about helping someone in their time of need and learning from your mistakes. The lead singer in Coldplay, Chris Martin, has never officially spoken about the specific inspiration for this song but we could assume that it is about his wife who was dealing with the death of her father in 2002. The song debuted on the show The O.C in episode 2.23 and it is featured in a montage of Seth and Summer dancing at the O Sea dance, Caleb dying, and Kristen learning of her father’s death and taking a bottle of vodka to bed.

I hate evrything about you .jpg

The second song that I chose was Three Days Grace "I hate everything about you". This song covers both love and anger, it is about a love-hate relationship and about ambivalence (the state of having mixed feelings or contradictory ideas about something or someone). The song is about totally hating everything about someone, but at the same time you don’t know why, but you love them.

Somebody that I used to know .jpeg

The third song that i chose to show emotion was Gotye's "Somebody that I use to know". This song covers sadness and heartbreak, it is about reminiscing about their relationship and break-up. The song draws from the aftermath and memory of several relationships, it was about a break up that Gotye had and he said that “It wasn’t a nasty breakup, but it was messy in the sense that we hurt each other more than we needed to because it wasn’t a clean break. I guess it’s closest to what the chorus is about. We both realized we had to move on and we haven’t seen each other since.”

How music platforms have changed the music industry

It is no longer about the New Releases

Back before the streaming took over, an artist would release a new tune it would climb the charts rather than enter at number 1 and go down in the charts. There would be chart battles between lots of different artists. Streaming encourages binging on individual artists like Ed Sheeran.

It is harder for artists to make the fortunes they once thought

Taylor Swift was one of the first to highlight the financial implications of streaming for mega-selling artists with an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal way back in July 2014. She argued that music shouldn’t be free and that making so, devalues it to a dangerous degree. Taylor later pulled her music off Spotify and refused to allow Apple to offer music from her latest music from her latest album as part of a trial period during which they did not plan to pay royalties to artists. The actual payment scheme for streaming is complex. Artists do get paid, particularly from advert revenue, but not in a straightforward way as it was in the past.
