Project 2 Proposal

Project Overview

For Project 2 we decided to focus on music production. We decided to collaborate with 2 fellow students whose music we were impressed with to publish their music. We are going to help them record and promote their music by using techniques such as podcasts and behind the scene footage. We will accumulate this promotional material and plan a release schedule for each aspect so that we can promote them accordingly.

We have already discussed this with the students that we hope to work with and they are just as excited as we are to be doing this.

How we will plan our time

Our deadlines will be discussed with our team but we envisage completing everything by the 27th of January. As there are a variety of tasks to do, we will have a selection of different deadlines within the project such as when we need to release the music, release the podcasts and release the behind the scenes footage of the project. This will be carefully planned out and we will have a schedule that will be stuck to as closely as possible. However we are aware that we may need to be flexible and frequently review those deadlines as we know that things could end up taking more or less time than estimated to do.

We will have weekly meetings to review our progress, ensuring we record details of the meetings either in note form or by creating a weekly podcast so that we can refer back to them if needed in the future.

How will we evaluate how the project is developing

We will evaluate how the project is progressing during our weekly meetings and discuss what we have done that week, whether we are sticking to our predicted schedule and if we are happy with where the project is at the time. We will then be able to release a weekly podcast that will also assist in promoting our project.

Towards the end of the project, we will assess whether our project has changed and discuss any aspects we have had to change due to scheduling or other factors.

At the end of the project we will have a final meeting where we can evaluate our successes or areas for improvement.

Research we will need to do

For research, we need to discover the roles within a record label. We have already made a start on this by using a premade Prezzi that gives information on job roles within record companies (https://prezi.com/d96qujgxu7jo/job-roles-within-record-companies/). We will also need to research what platforms are viable for us to release the music on along with any additional costs that will go with this. Additionally, we will be able to go through our Project 1 research and select aspects that will be useful to us in this project.

After researching how releasing music works, we discovered that music is either released through record label or an aggregator. During research, we found out that aggregators are a conduit to help you produce  your music globally through digital stores and streaming platforms. They make their money by charging upfront fees.

Potential costs

At the moment our potential costs would involve:

  • If we release our music on a good platform will we need to pay for it?

  • If we make any money from it, how will we split the earnings between us?

  • Do we want to do a gig to get the name out there, if so will we need to pay for a venue?

Our Individual Roles

Olivia and I will take on the roles of Directors which will link us to every aspect of the label, such as marketing, the development of the project and the development of the artist. We will all be involved with the production roles which include audio and video. Jordon is already well established in his genre of music so we will be doing what he feels comfortable with. Olivia and I will be producing the marketing and publicity by making posters and promotional material that can go out to the public through word of mouth and social media.

What will the finished project be and how will we judge our success?

Our finished project will be a few tracks, maybe an album but we aren’t going to set something too dramatic as it will be our first experience of this. We will also have a few podcasts and a few behind the scenes videos.

We will judge our success by how many people enjoy the tracks and if we have had fun. We will also be judging it on how our artist, Jordan, feels with the finished product.
